Pre-dawn departures

The 6am flight is the whole problem.

From the Tablelands it is not an early start, it is a night without much sleep and two hours of dark highway. That run is most of what we do, and none of it costs a cent more than a midday one.

Waiting in your driveway before the alarm has finished.

A 12:45am pickup is a normal shift here, not a favour. The time is confirmed in writing when you book and it already carries the margin for fog and roadworks.

The arithmetic

We count backwards from the aircraft, not forwards from your alarm.

Three numbers decide your pickup time, and only one of them is negotiable.

1 · The check-in window Three hours before an international departure, two hours before a domestic one. Airlines close checked baggage well before boarding, and they do not make exceptions for the Hume.
2 · The drive Roughly two hours from Goulburn, more from the outer localities. Longer again if your road is country before it is highway.
3 · The margin The only part we control. Fog on the tablelands, roadworks on the Hume, a wallaby at the wrong moment. This is why we do not leave on the dot.

Why it feels an hour earlier than people expect

Most people plan from the departure time and subtract the drive. That is the mistake. The airline's deadline is not the departure — it is baggage cut-off, and we allow three hours at the terminal for an international service so a queue does not decide your day.

Add that to a two-hour drive and a 6am flight out of Goulburn means leaving at a quarter to two in the morning. Not five, not four. Once you see the number written down it stops being a surprise, which is exactly why we put it in the booking confirmation rather than mentioning it on the night.

What the road is like at that hour

Quiet, mostly. The Hume at 2am is trucks and very little else, and the M5 is empty in a way it never is at any other time — the one genuine advantage of a pre-dawn departure. The trade-offs are fog and wildlife.

The Tablelands sit high, and the Hume north of Goulburn, the Federal Highway climb past Lake George and the Crookwell Road all fog before dawn through the colder months. Kangaroos are about at first light on every road east of Tarago and south of Braidwood. Neither is dangerous when the driver is expecting it and has left enough time. Both are the reason we do not run these trips to the minute.

If you are on an unsealed road, help us find you. At 2am there is no daylight and often no phone signal. A property name, the gate colour, a mailbox, "second gate past the cattle grid" — any of those beats a street number. Leaving a light on at the gate is the single most useful thing you can do.

The alternative

Or you drive it yourself at two in the morning.

That is the honest comparison. Not a taxi, because there is no rank open out here at that hour, and not rideshare, because it does not reliably service the Tablelands at all.

Your realistic options are a night in a Sydney hotel before the flight, four hundred kilometres of driving with a car left in airport parking for the duration, or handing the drive to somebody who does it every day. We are obviously not neutral, but those are the three.

Early pickups

What people ask before booking a 2am start.

Do you charge more for an early morning pickup?

No surge, no weekend rate and no public-holiday surcharge. Set fees apply for pickups before 6am (+$20), after 8pm (+$10) or after 10pm (+$20). A 12:45am Boxing Day pickup is the published fare plus the set $20 early-pickup fee, with no holiday loading.

How early is too early?

There isn't one. Midnight, 1am, 3am — these are ordinary bookings for us, and the pre-dawn run is genuinely the easiest driving of the day.

Will the driver knock, or wait outside?

Whatever you prefer, and we will agree it when you book. Most people ask us to text on arrival rather than knock at 2am and wake the house.

What happens if I sleep through?

We ring you. Then we ring you again. Drivers are used to it and will wait a reasonable while — but tell us at booking if you are a heavy sleeper so the driver knows to be persistent rather than polite.

Is it safer than driving myself at that hour?

We would say yes, and not only because we are selling it. The driver has slept, has done the road hundreds of times, knows where the fog sits and where the wildlife crosses, and is not four hundred kilometres into a round trip before the flight has even boarded.

Can you pick up from a rural property in the dark?

Routinely. Give us the property name, the road surface and something recognisable — a gate colour, a mailbox, a cattle grid. A light left on at the gate helps more than anything else.

What about coming home late at night?

Same thing in reverse: the same fare plus $10 for the airport pickup ($20 more after 10pm). Give us the flight number and we track it, so a midnight landing that turns into a 2am landing does not cost you extra or leave you stranded.

Give us the flight number. We will give you the time.

Same fixed fare whatever the hour. No deposit, and you pay after drop-off.

Not sure which option suits you? Ask and we will tell you honestly.
